West Orange Democratic Municipal Chairman Abdur R. Yasin officially launched his campaign for Essex County Board of Commissioner-At-Large on Tuesday, one of several Democrats seeking nomination.
Yasin, a firefighter in West Orange for more than two decades and a part-time lecturer, was first elected West Orange Democratic chair in a surprise 2018 victory. A lifelong Essex County resident, Yasin said he hopes to focus on bolstering county services
“For more than two decades, I have dedicated my life to public service — protecting families as a firefighter, supporting our party as West Orange Democratic Chair, and educating the next generation in higher ed classrooms,” said Yasin. “Now more than ever, Essex County deserves leadership rooted in service, integrity, and real-world experience.”
Three at-large county commissioners are not seeking re-election, and eleven Democrats remain in the race for four seats.
Yasin had filed to run but not publicly announced his campaign. He said he will seek the endorsement at the Essex County Democratic Convention on March 21.
“With rising costs and growing demands on local services, we need county leadership that understands both frontline public service and the needs of our communities,” Yasin said. “I am ready to bring that perspective to the Commissioner’s board.”
Also seeking party support are Livingston Mayor Shawn Klein, Verona Councilwoman Christine McGrath, Irvington Councilwoman Charnette Fredric, former Montclair Mayor Robert Russo, former Newark Public Schools Advisory Board member Marques-Aquil Lewis, former Millburn Mayor Annette Romano, former Livingston school board member Vineeta Khanna, former Maplewood Township Committeewoman Deb Engel, and Corey Anderson, the Bloomfield Democratic Municipal Vice Chairman, filed letters of intent to seek party support at the March 21 convention in advance of last Friday’s 5 PM deadline.
Montclair Mayor Renee Baskerville dropped out of the race on Monday.
