Former Gov. Chris Christie appears poised to be on the stage when Republican presidential candidates meet for their first debate on August 23 after announcing this evening that more than 40,000 donors have contributed to his campaign.
“After being in this race for only a month, we’ve received over 40k individual donations to our campaign and met all RNC requirements to reach the debate stage. Americans are ready for someone to stand up to Donald Trump, and that’s exactly what I’m doing,” Christie said on Twitter. “ Get your popcorn.”
The Republican National Committee set two requirements to qualify for the debate in Milwaukee: 40,000 donors — at least 200 in at least 20 states — and either 1% in three nationally-recognized polls. Christie was at 3% in a Morning Consult poll released this week.
In that poll, Donald Trump leads Ron DeSantis, 56%-17%, followed by Vivek Ramaswamey (8%) and Mike Pence (7%). Nikki Haley and Tim Scott are also at 3%, and Asa Hutchinson is at 1%.
Trump, DeSantis, Ramaswamey, Haley and Scott have also hit the 40,000-donor threshold.
