The Newark Police Superior Officers’ Association has endorsed Armando Fontoura for re-election to an 11th term as Essex County Sheriff.
The union president, John J. Chrystal, called Fontoura a “knowledgeable, experienced, and a trustworthy professional who has served the public with integrity and dedication for over the past 40 plus years.”
Fontoura faces former Deputy Newark Police Director John Arnold and Barry Jackson in the June 8 Democratic primary.
He has run against Arnold once before. In 2012, Fontoura beat him by 25,835 votes, 62%-19%, in a four-candidate primary.
Gov. Phil Murphy, former Gov. Richard Codey and Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) have endorsed Fontoura for re-election.
The New Jersey State PBA has endorsed Arnold.
