Democrats swept all three contested Wallington Borough Council seats on Tuesday, defeating two Republican incumbents in the regular council race and winning an unexpired term to gain a foothold in a borough where Republicans previously held every seat in municipal government.
Democrats Walter Wargacki Jr. and Albert Zaccone defeated Republican Councilmembers Dennis Graham and Sylwia Hejzner, who were seeking re-election to the two regular council seats.
Wargacki led the four-candidate field with 1,803 votes, followed by Zaccone with 1,713 votes. Graham received 1,040 votes (18.60%), while Hejzner received 1,032 votes.
Democrat Roman Kruk also won the borough’s unexpired two-year council term, defeating Republican John P. Kosuda, 1,722 to 1,091. Kosuda had been appointed to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Councilwoman Beata Balik, who was re-elected last year before stepping down.
Zaccone is a realtor and small business owner who previously served on the Wallington Zoning Board. Wargacki also won a seat on the council in Tuesday’s election.
The results mark a significant shift in Wallington’s political makeup, where Republicans previously controlled every seat on the Borough Council and the mayor’s office.
Wallington has been one of Bergen County’s strongest Republican municipalities in recent elections. Donald Trump carried the borough by nearly 30 points in 2024, while Republican gubernatorial nominee Jack Ciattarelli won Wallington by six points in 2025.
