Gov. Phil Murphy was in Union City this morning to launch Mayor Brian Stack’s annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway.
Stack, who is also a state senator, distributes nearly 30,000 turkeys every November to his constituents.
The Brian J. Stack Civic Association pays for the turkeys, as well as pies and Thanksgiving luncheons.
Union City has an estimated population of 68,250, with about 23,515 households with an average of three persons per household, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. About 94% of all Union City residents have lived in the same house or apartment for more than one year, and 86% speak a language other than English in their home.
The extraordinarily popular Stack was unopposed in his 2018 mayoral election. When he ran for re-election to the Senate in 2017, he received 96% of the vote in his hometown against Republican Beth Hamburger.
