The Jersey Journal has reported that Joseph “Butchie” Cassidy, who served as Hudson County Sheriff from 1996 to 2007, passed away on Tuesday. He was 76.

Cassidy was a Jersey City deputy police chief when Democrats picked him to replace three-term Sheriff Edward Webster in 1995.  He lost the twelve years later during the Hudson warette of 2007 when party leaders replaced him on their slate with Juan Perez by a 49%-47%. He lost a bid for Jersey City Council in 2009.

A viewing will be held for Cassidy on Thursday from 4-8 PM and on Friday from 4-7 PM at the Greenville Memorial Home.  A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church at 10AM Saturday.
