Facing a filing deadline of 4 PM tomorrow, just two independent candidates have filed nominating petitions to run for State Assembly in the November general election.
William Cruz will again challenge Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez in the 19th district. The Parlin resident ran in 2017 and won 1,488 votes (2%).
In the 13th district, perennial candidate Hank Schroeder will run for the Assembly. Schroeder ran for U.S. Senate in 2018 and finished 8th out of 8 candidates with 8,854 votes statewide – just slightly more than ¼ of one percent.
Schroeder won 1.8% in his challenge to Rep. Chris Smith (R-Hamilton) in 2016, 1.9% as a State Assembly candidate in the 30th district in 2015, 0.31% in his 2014 race for U.S. Senate, and 0.13% as a candidate for governor in 2013.
