Assemblywoman Shanique Speight has no interest in becoming Newark’s first woman mayor.
“No way,” Speight said when asked if she had any such aspirations. “Right now, I just take it day-by-day, and I’m just happy I’m in the position that I am now. I’m happy that I’m able to make change by doing what I’m doing now. It’s definitely a blessing to be here.”
The first-term assemblywoman replaced former Assemblywoman Blonnie Watson after she chose not to run for reelection in 2017. Watson was appointed to replace former Assemblywoman Grace Spencer after the latter became a state Superior Court judge.
