Peggy Halpin, who served as vice chair of the Cumberland County Democratic Organization, died on January 24. She was 94. Halpin was the widow of former Assembly Speaker Robert J. Halpin, who died in 2013. A 1950s era Vineland Councilman, Bob Halpin served in the Assembly from 1960 to 1968 and was the speaker when he lost a challenge to State Sen. Robert Kay by a narrow 51%-48% margin in 1967. He later served as Cumberland County Freeholder and Democratic County Chairman.
Robert Fulper, a former mayor of West Amwell, died on January 31. He was 93.
Howard Coltenback, a former Secaucus councilman, died on February 2. He was 84.
Ted Roberto, who served as a Wanaque councilman, died on February 2. He was 98. Roberto was a U.S. Navy veteran during World War II and was retired as the head of water purification for the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission.
Daniel C. Smith, Jr., a New Jersey native who later had a career in Kansas politics, died on January 31. He was 65. Smith was a police officer and detective in Hunterdon County before joining the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1986. He served as a member of the Girard, Kansas City Council for 16 years.
Louis Crescitelli, Jr., who was involved in Republican politics in Salem and Cumberland counties, died on February 2. He was 79.
