New Yorkers are giving Gov. Andrew Cuomo an 87%-11% approval rating for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, eclipsing Gov. Chris Christie’s approvals after Superstorm Sandy.

A Siena College poll released today gave President Donald Trump an upside-down 41%-56% approval rating on his handling of COVID-19, with Vice President Mike Pence at 41%-47% and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio at 61%-31%.

On the other side of the Hudson River no polling data has been released on Gov. Phil Murphy’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis.

“In the midst of this global pandemic, New Yorkers approve of Governor Cuomo’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic with near universal support. At least 85 percent of voters from every region approve of his handling of the crisis, as do 95 percent of Democrats, 87 percent of independents and even 70 percent of Republicans,” said Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg. “President Trump, on the other hand, gets praise from 82 percent of Republicans, but 52 percent of independents and 79 percent of Democrats disapprove of the job he’s doing.

Cuomo’s overall favorables jumped to 71%-23%, an enormous increase over his February 2020 numbers: 44%-54%.

Trump’s New York favorables went from 36%-61% in February to 35%-59% this month.

The Siena poll showed little movement for U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who went from 54%-38% in February to 52%-38% in March.

After Sandy, Christie’s approvals shot up to 67%-21%, according to a December 2012 Monmouth University Poll.

More than six out of ten New Jerseyans (61%) have Christie an A for his handling of Superstorm Sandy.  An addition 24% gave him a B and just 3% gave him a failing grade.

Christie, who left office with the worst approval ratings in New Jersey history, had approval ratings of 57%-30% among Democrats a month after Sandy.

The Siena College poll was conducted March 22-26 and has a margin of error of +/- 4.4%.
