Report: Van Drew said he wouldn’t vote for Trump weeks before joining GOP

‘I will not vote for him,’ Van Drew said in voicemail obtained by the Philadelphia Inquirer

Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-Dennis) represents New Jersey's 2nd district in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Weeks before switching his party alignment, Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis) told a constituent he wouldn’t be voting for President Donald Trump, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report.

“I haven’t voted for him, I didn’t support him, I will not vote for him,” Van Drew said in a Nov. 30 voicemail obtained by the inquirer.

Van Drew defected to the Republican party last month after losing support among rank-and-file Democrats in the second district over his opposition to Trump’s impeachment.

He told the voter he would prefer to beat Trump at the ballot box in 2020, though, after leaving the Democratic party, Van Drew pledged “undying support” for Trump.

In return, Trump has endorsed him and pressured Republican leaders in the district to do the same.

The president is also coming to Wildwood to hold a rally for Van Drew next week.
