Report: Van Drew could still run as a Democrat

Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-Dennis) represents New Jersey's 2nd district in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Just when you think New Jersey politics can’t get any stranger, Jefferson Van Drew floats that he might return to the Democratic Party after voting against the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

A reporter for The Hill tweeted tonight that Van Drew “did not dismiss running for re-election as a Democrat, saying it is possible and that he will have an announcement in the coming days.”

Olivia Beavers said she asked Van Drew “why wait and vote as a Democrat vs. a Republican, he wouldn’t add fuel to fire with Dems on split.”

“He replied that things like this take time,” Beavers quoted Van Drew as saying.  “Technically, absolutely — as of this moment, I am a registered Democrat.”

The freshman congressman also declined to say when he would announce changing parties.

“You will know in a short period of time,” Beavers said Van Drew told her.
