Delaney won’t take on Norcross in primary

Collingswood Democratic Municipal Chair Kate Delany

Collingwood Democratic Municipal Chair Kate Delaney will not challenge Rep. Donald Norcross (D-Camden) in the Democratic primary this year.

“I am not running for Congress,” said Delaney, whose name had been mentioned as a possible primary opponent for Norcross in New Jersey’s 1st district.

Delaney would not preclude the entrance of a Norcross primary opponent backed by the South Jersey Progressive Democrats.

Norcross has boxed out potential primary rivals by securing early endorsements from key statewide progressive leaders, including Gov. Phil Murphy, New Jersey CWA state director Hetty Rosenstein, and NJEA president Marie Blistan.

A fundraiser last month headlined by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Senator Cory Booker, former Gov. Jim Florio and Murphy raised an estimated $1.75 million for the Norcross campaign, a staff source said.

Delaney, the president of the South Jersey Progressive Democrats, was elected municipal chair in 2019 after a progressive slate upset the Camden Democratic organization candidates in the June 5 primary by 74 votes.
