Just one vote separates a Republican challenger and a Democratic incumbent in Millburn, where the GOP has taken control of the township committee in a municipality that Democrat Mikie Sherrill carried with 62% last week.
Kris Heinrichs leads Deputy Mayor Michael Cohen, 3,720 to 3,719, with about 218 votes still uncounted and seven outstanding cure letters.
The top vote-getter, Republican Jamie Serruto, a 24-year-old former school board member, leads the pack with 3,849 votes and has secured one of the two seats; with two Republicans elected in 2023, the GOP will take control for the first time in nearly a decade.
Democrat Annette Romano, the sitting mayor, lost her bid for re-election, finishing fourth with 3,685 votes.
Heinrichs is a U.S. Army veteran and current school board president.
This could be Millburn’s last partisan election. Voters overwhelmingly approved a Charter Study Commission that is expected to move local contests to non-partisan.
