Passaic County Democrats selected Nick Veliky, the president of the Clifton Democratic Club, to fill a vacancy on the Board of Commissioners.

He will replace John Bartlett, who resigned this week to take his new post as general counsel of the Gateway Development Corporation.

Veliky won the Democratic nomination for county commissioner in the June 2 primary.  He is seeking the seat of retiring County Commissioner Bruce James in the November general election.

Democrats have not yet selected a candidate to run for Bartlett’s unexpired term in a November special election.  The winner of that election will be sworn in after the results are certified; that means Veliky will leave the Board of County Commissioners in November and will not take office until January, if he defeats his Republican opponent this year.

Passaic County Democrats will hold another convention in early August to pick the candidate who will run for Bartlett’s unexpired term.

Republicans have not yet selected their candidate.
