Interim Bloomfield Mayor Ted Gamble has lost his Democratic primary race against Councilwoman Jenny Mundell, who had the support of local Democratic committee, the New Jersey Globe projects.

As of 9:33 p.m., Mundell leads Gamble 59%-41%. Mundell’s council running mate, Monica Charris Tabares, is up 71%-29% over Rodney Cauthen, Gamble’s running mate.

The mayor’s office opened up at the beginning of this year, when former Mayor Michael Venezia left to become a state assemblyman. Mundell was the choice of the Bloomfield Democratic organization for his seat, but the Bloomfield Township Council rebelled and instead chose Gamble, a fellow member of the council.

Mundell quickly announced that she would challenge Gamble in the Democratic primary, and she garnered the support of many top Essex Democrats in doing so, among them Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair).
