Democrats seem to hold three council seats, however

The New Jersey Globe projects that former Republican State Sen. Marcia Karrow has flipped the Flemington mayor’s office, unseating Democratic incumbent Betsy Driver.

As of 11:08 p.m., Karrow leads Driver 54%-46%, a margin of 91 votes.

Driver was first elected to the mayor’s office in 2018, unseating Republican incumbent Phil Greiner by just 26 votes. A former journalist and CBS News producer, Driver became the first openly intersex person to win public office in the entire country.

Karrow, meanwhile, has had a long political career dating back to 1993, when she won a seat on the Raritan Township Committee. (Raritan Township surrounds Flemington, and the two municipalities share a school district.) Karrow was elected to the State Assembly in 2005 and briefly served in the State Senate before losing a Republican primary in 2009 to now-State Sen. Michael Doherty (R-Oxford).

Even though Karrow has won the mayor’s office, three Democrats – Councilman Jeremy Long, Susan Engelhardt, and Councilman Tony Parker – lead their Republican opponents for three seats on the borough council.

Long (27%) and Engelhardt (26%) lead Republicans Milissa Swingle (24%) and James Weintraub (23%) for two full terms, while Parker leads Republican Bryan Cimino 52%-48% for an unexpired term.
