State Sen. Benjie Wimberly (D-Paterson) and Assemblyman Balvir Singh (D-Burlington Twp) were sworn into office Thursday afternoon.

Senate President Nick Scutari swore Wimberly in during the upper chamber’s afternoon session. Wimberly will repeat the oath of office in Paterson on Thursday night and deliver remarks, Scutari said.

Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin delivered the oath of office to Singh during a session Thursday afternoon.

“I will remain committed to ensuring the voices of everyday people in Burlington County and across New Jersey are heard in Trenton,” Singh said in a release. “I am excited to work alongside my new partners in the Legislature as we continue to build on efforts to make New Jersey a more equitable and prosperous place for all residents.”

Wimberly succeeds now-Rep. Nellie Pou (D-North Haledon), who left the halls of the statehouse for the halls of Congress. Singh replaced now-Rep. Herb Conaway Jr. (D-Delran).

Wimberly defeated his longtime running mate, Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter (D-Paterson), at a meeting of Democratic county committee members from the 35th district earlier this month.

Singh defeated Moorestown Councilwoman and former Mayor Nicole Gillespie 172-93 in a 65%-35% vote in a special election convention of county committee members from 17 municipalities in the 7th legislative district.
