Wood-Ridge native forced to step down after U.S. Capitol insurrection

Michael Stenger, a native of Wood-Ridge who resigned as segreant-at-arms of the U.S. Senate after the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, died on June 27.  He was 71.

Stenger became sergeant-at-arms in 2018 and resigned shortly after the capitol protests.  The Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, had sought his resignation after protestors gained access to the Senate chamber.

He attended public schools in Wood-Ridge and Fairleigh Dickinson University before joining the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.  He spent 35 years with the U.S. Secret Service , rising to the post of assistant director before his retirement.

Funeral services will be held in Maywood and he will be buried on Saturday at the George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery in Paramus.
