Gov. Phil Murphy has gone from being “middle class on a good day” to “millionaires like me” in a new TV ad aimed at building public support for his proposed millionaire’s tax.
The ad is being aired by New Direction NJ, a dark-money non-profit run by former Murphy campaign consultants. The group has been criticized for not releasing their donors. POLITICO reported this week that the state’s largest public employee union contributed $2.5 million to the organization.
Murphy narrates the ad.
“Together with good people in the Legislature, we’re investing in the middle-class and those striving to get there with good jobs and great schools and affordable health care so everyone has a shot at success,” Murphy says. “Next is having millionaire’s like me pay our fair share to reduce the burden for everyone else.”
The state budget is due in 39 days or New Jersey faces a government shutdown.
