Frank Nunziato scored a stunning off-the-line victory in the Democratic primary for mayor of Rutherford one day after Gov. Phil Murphy campaigned for his opponent.
Nunziato beat Stephanie McGowan by 75 votes, 801 to 726 (52%-48%).
Murphy stumped for McGowan and her running mates at the Rutherford train station on Monday. McGowan was an early supporter of Murphy’s 2017 campaign for governor.
In April, Murphy appeared at a fundraiser for McGowan.
Nunziato and McGowan are both members of the borough council.
Incumbents Thomas Mullahey and Mark Godsack ran for council without opposition. They will now run on the Democratic line in November with Nunziato.
Mayor Joseph DeSalvo switched from Republican to Democrat in February but wound up not seeking re-election at all.
Republicans are running Marc Marsi, the president of the Hoboken PBA, for mayor. He defeated John Grande by a 68%-31% margin, 300 to 139.

I can't speak for The (Bergen) Record, which didn't include election results in their print edition this morning and has seen their print circulation drop 71% since Gannett bought the paper, but my numbers come directly from The (Bergen) County Clerk: Nunziato 801, McGowan 726. But at least this time they didn't rip us off.
