Newark Mayor Ras Baraka today became the first to file nominating petitions for the Democratic gubernatorial primary, submitting 11,116 signatures to get on the ballot.

“This outpouring of support is proof of the excitement and energy building around this movement,” Baraka said.  “From every corner of the state, people are standing up and joining us because they believe in the power of real leadership – leadership that speaks truth, brings people together, and delivers results for working families.”

Candidates seeking to run in the June 10 primary need 2,500 signatures to appear on the ballot.

Last week, former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli became the first Republican to file signatures – about 3,000 of them.

The filing deadline is March 24 at 4 PM.  Candidates may continue to add signatures until then.

“This isn’t just about getting on the ballot. It’s about building something bigger than any one person – a people-powered campaign that’s fueled by the voices, hopes, and dreams of communities that for too long have been left out and left behind,” stated Baraka.  “I couldn’t be more proud of the movement we’re building together, and this is only the beginning.”
