Bergen GOP to pick candidate on Monday

Hasbrouck Heights Mayor is frontrunner

Hasbrouck Heights Mayor Jack DeLorenzo

Bergen County Republicans have called a special convention for Monday night to pick a candidate for Sheriff.

Secretary of State Tahesha Way has determined that a November special election is necessary following the resignation — or supposed resignation — of Michael Saudino.  Saudino has stepped down after being caught on tape making racist and homophobic comments.

The leading candidate on the GOP side is Jack DeLorenzo, the mayor of Hasbrouck Heights.  He faces a challenge from Alan Brundage, a former Paramus councilman.

Saudino was elected as a Republican in 2010 and 2013 and as a Democrat in 2016.
