Analilia Mejia, a former labor organizer now running for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th congressional district, earned another union endorsement yesterday from the Communication Workers of America Local 1037.
CWA 1037 represents more than 10,000 workers, most of them state workers across North Jersey, and Mejia’s campaign said it’s one of the largest CWA locals in the country.
“CWA Local 1037 is proud to endorse Analilia Mejia for Congress,” CWA 1037 President Ken McNamara said in a statement. “At a time when working families need a true champion in Washington, we could ask for no greater ally and friend than Analilia. Whether it’s the fight for workers’ rights, paid family leave, affordable healthcare, or a living wage, Analilia has always stood with the working people of New Jersey.”
Mejia, one of 12 candidates running to succeed Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill, spent years working for unions like SEIU and UNITE HERE; she was also the executive director of the New Jersey Working Families Party, which has close ties to progressive unions like the CWA. Earlier this week, Mejia received the endorsement from the SEIU State Council.
Several of Mejia’s 11th district opponents have also gotten backing from different arms of the labor community. A number of unions have endorsed Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill (D-Montclair), and Passaic County Commissioner John Bartlett (D-Wayne) and former Rep. Tom Malinowski have each gotten one union endorsement as well.
