Union City Mayor and State Sen. Brian Stack, the leader of a dominant political machine in his city, secured re-election with his slate of city commissioners on Tuesday. Stack, who became mayor in 2000, is the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history.
As of 8:42 PM, Stack had received 6,100 votes, with his ticketmates, Wendy Grullon, Maryury Martinetti, Lucio Fernandez, and Celin Valdivia, trailing a couple of hundred votes behind.
Stack hasn’t faced a challenger in four terms; he was first elected in 2000. The mayor’s four incumbent commissioner running mates will cruise to re-election; none face a challenge this year.
Despite the unopposed nature of this month’s election, Stack is still investing heavily in turnout operations, one of the most effective in the state. Stack runs scared, even if it’s literally against nobody. Last night, Gov. Mikie Sherrill joined over 500 Stack supporters at an election eve rally.
