State Sen. Joseph Cryan (D-Union) announced Friday that he is seeking re-election in 2027 to his solidly Democratic Senate seat.

Cryan, representing the 20th legislative district, launched his re-election campaign with the endorsement of state Senate President and Union County Democratic Chair Nicholas Scutari and Elizabeth Mayor J. Christian Bollwage. In the announcement, Cryan touted his work in securing funding for his district, supporting veterans, and reforming law enforcement’s handling of sexual assault cases.

“In these difficult and uncertain times in our country we need to be as clear and decisive as possible with our intentions,” Cryan said. “As a father and grandfather, I believe it has never been more urgent to fight for our shared values.”

No other candidate has filed to run for the seat.

“Senator Cryan continues to be an invaluable champion of the district,” Scutari and Bollwage said. “His commitment to serving the public is unquestionable and his passion and willingness to directly address the individual needs of his constituents has never faltered. We are endorsing Joe Cryan today because our state and our country need fighters and Joe continues to deliver.”

The 64-year-old Cryan first won election to the Senate in 2017. He had previously served in the Assembly between 2002 and 2014. Cryan and Scutari once had a tense relationship, but united for the 2021 election.
