New York Port Authority commissioner dies

Philanthropist George T. McDonald, a commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, has died.  He had been battling lung cancer.

McDonald had been appointed to fill a New York seat by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2017.

He had unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for mayor of New York City in 2013, losing the primary to Joe Lhota.

He had led The Doe Fund, a non-profit group that had helped individuals struggling with poverty and post-incarceration challenges obtain jobs and housing.
