As he approaches the start of his third year in the White House, President Joe Biden continues to struggle to gain popularity in New Jersey, a state that he carried by sixteen percentage point in the 2020 election, a new Monmouth University poll released today shows.
Biden has upside-down job approval ratings of 46%-48% heading into a year when all 120 seats in the New Jersey legislature are up for grabs. He was at 47%-49% in an April 2022 Monmouth poll, a number that is statistically the same.
At the same point in 2019, President Donald Trump was at 37%-58% in New Jersey.
Among independents, Biden is heavily underwater at 34%-59%. He’s at 83%-12% among Democrats and 6%-90% among Republicans.
Biden is at 44%-50% in North Jersey, 49%-45% in Central Jersey, and 44%-49% in South Jersey. He’s at 41%-53% among men and 50%-43% among women. The poll puts the president at 49%-42% among residents ages 18-34, 40%-53% among New Jerseyans ages 35-54, and is at 49%-48% among people over the age of 55.
Since taking office, Biden gas dropped from his high of 55%-40% in a May 2021 Monmouth poll.
The Monmouth University Poll was conducted from January 5-9 with a sample size of 809 New Jersey adults and a margin of error of +/- 4.7%.
