One Republican and one Democrat are leading in a race for Sayreville Borough Council.
Incumbent Stanley “Stash” Synarski (9,314) and former Democratic Councilwoman Mary Novak (9,289) are in front, with Democrat Vincent Conti (9,038), a former councilman, and Christina Sitaca (8,920) trailing. Republican Christian Onuoha did not seek re-election.
Republicans Joseph Scilleri (1,012) and incumbent Shannon Spillane (1,000) lead Democrats Tracey Madigan (955) and James Kozee (943) in a race for two Republican-held seats on the Jamesburg Borough Council. Republicans must meet in two weeks to pick candidates to replace Mayor Thomas Gibbons, whose resignation after ten months in office is effective on November 8.
Republican Darin Accettulli, who was appointed to fill a vacancy last December, defeated Democrat Bridget Hlava with 55% of the vote in a special election to the Old Bridge Township Council Ward 2 seat.
Perth Amboy Mayor Helmin Caba was re-elected to a second term in the city’s newly-minted partisan election. He defeated Republican Sharon Hubberman, 56%-23%, with independent William Petrick, a former councilman, receiving 21%. Democrats Rose Morales and Stacey Peralta easily won council seats.
Democrats won in Cranbury, East Brunswick, Highland Park, Piscataway, and South Brunswick. Republicans were successful in South River.
