Hillsdale Councilwoman Abby Lundy has resigned and dropped her bid for re-election after being arrested on embezzlement and forgery charges from a Connecticut-based charity formed to provide bereavement support to families who lost a child to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Lundy, who served as director of development and community outreach, is accused of financial misconduct after an investigation showed that she failed to file payroll taxes and instead allegedly diverted monies to her personal account. As part of the alleged coverup, she allowed the group’s non-profit status to lapse and diverted some mail to her home address.
She is a former business manager of the New Jersey Library Association.
Local Republicans have until Thursday to pick a replacement candidate to run. Lundy and another GOP incumbent, Michael Escobar, were facing Democrats Christopher Camp and Melissa Mazza Chiong. Lundy and Escobar ran unopposed in 2021.
Lundy was seeking a fourth term on the borough council.
The Bergen County community of 10,143 people has a Democratic mayor and six Republican councilmembers.
