Former Gloucester County Sheriff Jonathan Sammons, who lost re-election in 2024 by 569 votes, will seek the Republican nomination for Gloucester County Commissioner this year to help the GOP capture control of county government for the first time in decades.
Sammons is running with businessman and philanthropist Byron Driscoll, the owner of the popular Mount Royal Inn, in a bid to unseat incumbents Frank DiMarco and Denice DiCarlo.
They pledged to “bring a common-sense approach to the county’s governing body.”
After two Republican county commissioners, Nick DeSilvio and Chris Konawel, won second terms last year, the GOP needs to pick up two more seats to have a majority. Democrats maintained control in 2022 and 2023.
Sammons beat five-term Sheriff Carmel Morina in 2021 on his second try, taking out the incumbent by 1,565 votes, 51%-49%. Morina mounted a comeback last year to regain his old job.
