Jamesburg Councilman Bertin Lefkovic became the first Democratic elected official to call on Assemblywoman Tennille McCoy (D-Hamilton) to resign amid allegations of a toxic workplace and ethics violations.

Lefkovic said McCoy’s troubles have compromised her ability to represent the 14th Legislative District and urged her to step aside so Democratic committee members can choose a replacement.

“For the good of Jamesburg Borough and the other towns that are part of New Jersey’s 14th legislative district, it is my opinion and my opinion alone that Assemblywoman McCoy should resign her office immediately and allow the Democratic committeepersons in our legislative district to choose a replacement as soon as possible,” he said.

Lefkovic also apologized for supporting McCoy at the Middlesex County Democratic Convention.  He said she won the endorsement by just four votes.

He acknowledged that he had not done enough due diligence before casting his ballot.

“I am embarrassed to admit that I allowed my preference for a woman of color over a white male candidate to be the main reason that I voted the way that I did, which was a disservice to both candidates,” said Lefkovic.
