Former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Barry Albin has joined Lowenstein Sandler as a partner in the litigation department and will chair the firm’s appellate practice group.

Albin left the top court last week when he reached the mandatory retirement age of 70.  He had served as an associate justice since 2002.

“Justice Albin is a brilliant trial and appellate lawyer, and jurist.  It is a personal and professional honor that my dear friend of more than two decades has chosen Lowenstein Sandler for the next chapter of his storied career,” said Christopher Porrino, a Lowenstein partner and a former state attorney general.  “He is a skilled litigator and formidable advocate in the courtroom and will be a tireless arbitrator and mediator for those seeking to resolve their most complicated and difficult disputes.”

Lowenstein Sandler is one of the state’s most prestigious and politically influential law firms.  A former partner, Matt Platkin, left earlier this year to become acting attorney general.   It’s noteworthy that Albin did not return to Wilentz, where he was a partner before Gov. James E. McGreevey nominated him to the Supreme Court.

Retired justices frequently move on to a big law firm.  Jaynee LaVecchia joined McCarter & English earlier this year, and Faustino Fernandez-Vina is now at Parker McCay.

“My long career has intersected with many outstanding Lowenstein lawyers, some of whom have served as my clerks. I look forward to joining a firm that pursues the highest standards of professional excellence and that is committed to doing justice and serving the community,” Albin said.
