Hoboken City Council President Jennifer Giattino, a former professional ballet dancer and mother of three who became a prominent player in local politics and a fierce advocate for good government and transparency, died suddenly on November 5 at her home.  She was 53.

“Jen’s dedication to our community will never be forgotten. Her kindness, humility, and quiet determination made her a cherished figure whose impact will be felt for generations to come,” said Mayor Ravi Bhalla.

The four-term councilwoman championed sustainability projects, advocated for small businesses, and was a careful watchdog over the city’s spending and tax dollars.

Giattino was elected to the Ward 6 city council seat in 2011, defeating incumbent Nino Giacchi by 106 votes, 55%-45%,.  She had the backing of Mayor Dawn Zimmer.

She was re-elected in 2015, defeating Assemblyman Carmelo Garcia by a massive 59%-41% margin.  Garcia had been dropped from the Assembly ticket; earlier this year, he admitted to taking bribes and is awaiting sentencing.

In 2019, Giattino won a third term in 2019 against Cristin Cricco-Powell, 53%-43%, with a third candidate, Frank Rosner, receiving 4%.

Her last campaign, in 2023, was a landslide: Giattino won 66% of the vote to capture a fourth term against Lauren Myers (24%) and Ian Rintel (10%).

Giattino ran for mayor in 2017.  Her colleagues picked her as council president six times and was considered a potential mayoral candidate next year.

Joe Giattino, her husband, said she was “an incredible mother but also a dedicated public servant who cared deeply about this community.”

“Jen’s unwavering commitment, kindness, and passion touched so many lives here in Hoboken,” he said.  “We are devastated by her loss, and I ask for privacy for our family as we try to navigate this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding and for keeping Jen in your thoughts and prayers.”
