Former Gov. Chris Christie, who tested positive for COVID this morning after spending time with President Donald Trump and others over the last week, has been hospitalized.
“In consultation with my doctors, I checked myself into Morristown Medical Center this afternoon,” Christie said on Twitter. “While I am feeling good and only have mild symptoms, due to my history of asthma we decided this is an important precautionary measure.”
CNN has reported that Christie is running a low-grade fever and experiencing some aches and pains.
Christie has dealt with a chronic asthma problem since childhood, something that puts the former two-term governor and presidential candidate in a higher risk category.
He has also publicly addressed battles with his weight and a 2013 lap-band procedure, but has stopped short of releasing health records over the years.
One physician told the New Jersey Globe that he concurred with Christie’s doctors and said that hospitalization was appropriate for someone with Christie’s history.
It’s not clear whether Morristown Medical Center has remdesiver, a drug used to treat COVID patients, or Regneron, the experimental treatment that was used on Trump on Friday.
Christie, 58, did not wear a mask when he attended a White House announcement of Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. According to published reports, he did not wear a mask while assisting Trump with debate preparations.
