Assemblywoman Mila Jasey (D-South Orange) reaffirmed her support for her son’s campaign for the U.S. Senate today.
At an event at Kean University today, The New Jersey Globe asked Jasey how a changed political environment – including a potential run for the U.S. Senate by First Lady Tammy Murphy – might impact her son’s candidacy.
“I’m supporting him,” Jasey said. “ Blood is thicker than anything else.”
Kyle Jasey announced his campaign against U.S. Senator Bob Menendez in August, before the Justice Department unsealed Menendez’s indictment on federal corruption charges.
Since then, Menendez’s support among New Jersey’s Democrats has evaporated, but Jasey’s run is still a long shot. He reported raising just $17,405 for his Senate campaign; his mother and father, retired Superior Court Judge Neil Jasey, each contributed $3,300.
After the indictment, Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) almost immediately announced his campaign to oust Menendez. First Lady Tammy Murphy is seen as seriously considering a U.S. Senate bid.
Jasey is retiring this year from the Assembly after sixteen years in the legislature. She became a last-minute replacement on the Democratic ticket after Assemblyman Mims Hackett (D-Orange) resigned following his arrest on federal corruption charges.
