Bennett leans into military background in first NJ-7 digital ad

First-time Democratic candidate says she was motivated to run by Trump’s election

Rebecca Bennett is up with her first ad of the Democratic primary for New Jersey’s 7th congressional district, a digital spot that emphasizes her military background and her two kids.

A first-time candidate for office, Bennett served in the Navy for more than a decade, and says in the ad, “For Them,” that Trump’s election to a second term motivated her to run for Congress. The spot will be part of a six-figure ad buy, Bennett’s campaign said.

“This campaign is about service, it’s about values, and it’s about the future of this country,” Bennett said in a statement. “I’m running for Congress to fight for the version of the country we are going to leave for my daughters and the next generation.”

Bennett is one of four Democrats running to challenge Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield), and she seems to be the first to start reaching voters directly via ads. Her three opponents – Tina Shah, Brian Varela, and Michael Roth – have all raised plenty of money, though, and the primary is likely to feature plenty of ad wars before it’s through.

Bennett: “Do it for them. The morning after Trump’s election, I knew what I had to do – what I’ve always done as a Navy pilot, aircraft commander, a leader in health care: go to work and fight back against lawlessness, corruption, chaos. For them, for all of us. I’m Rebecca Bennett. I approve this message because I fought my whole life for my country and my community. In Congress, I’ll do it again.”
