New Jersey’s Statewide Voter Registration System will be shut down through tomorrow as state election officials seek to fix issues related to noncitizens being included on voter rolls.
County election officials received an email at 11:51 PM on Sunday telling them the SVRS will be inaccessible through August 4.
The email came from Christopher Phillips, a support agent at KNOWiNK, the vendor that manages the state voter registration data.
“Please keep this in mind for scheduling purposes. You will be notified when the system becomes available,” Phillips wrote. “If there are changes to the timeline, a new update will be distributed.”
SVRS is the central database used by state and county election officials to process voter registrations, maintain voter records, and administer elections. Temporarily taking the system offline prevents county officials from accessing or updating those records.
The shutdown follows the disclosure that approximately 6,600 noncitizens were improperly registered to vote through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. About 400 of those individuals subsequently cast ballots, according to Gov. Mikie Sherrill.
