The O’Toole Chronicles: Choices

By Kevin O'Toole, January 10 2023 8:35 am

I’ve had choices
Since the day that I was born
There were voices
That told me right from wrong
If I had listened
No, I wouldn’t be here today
Living and dying
With the choices I made

George Jones

I hope that this year, 2023, becomes the year that people own up and take responsibility for their lives and their choices. It seems to me that these past few years far too many individuals have failed to own their lot in life, own their short comings, and own their problems. It seems to me that some segments of our generation allow this victim syndrome to dominate the excuse lane in their lives. If the future is bleak, make some decisions to change it.

I have touched on this theme before, but feel a pressing need to resurface this issue and flesh it out.

We have made choices since grammar school, and to some extent have had our lives shaped by those choices. In the early days, we had an abundance of advice from the older generation and they guided us to make life decisions and, at some later point, we made those choices on our own. Ultimately, we live a life borne out of the ramifications of life long choices that we made.

Whether we decide to pursue an education—our choice.
Whether we decide to pursue having a family—our choice.
Whether we decide to live honorably—our choice.
Whether we keep true to our ethical and moral commitments-our choice.
Whether we enter into toxic relationships—our choice.
Whether we accept responsibility for our decisions–our choice.
Whether we act with fiscal integrity and prudence–our choice.
Whether we take care of ourselves, mentally and physically—our choice.
Whether we are happy with our career choices and professional advancement-our choice.
Whether we treat other individuals with respect and dignity–our choice.
Whether we donate enough time and money to charity—our choice.

The point to all of this is we live in brilliant and amazing times and we need to gut check ourselves on occasion to appreciate what we have in front of us and reflect on the choices that we have made that brought us here. And if you are unhappy with any part of your life, make choices to change what needs to be changed and accept that we are where we are because of life long decisions that we made and have brought us to this exact place.

2023 is the year to get your life on track with the right choices.
