‘Turban Man’ hosts suspended for 10 days

By Nikita Biryukov, July 26 2018 4:39 pm

Two New Jersey 101.5 daytime commentators will be suspended for 10 days after they repeatedly referred to State Attorney General Gurbir Grewal as “Turban Man” during a segment on the state halting marijuana prosecutions.

“We offer our sincerest apologies to Attorney General Gurbir Grewal as well as the Sikh and East Asian communities for a series of insensitive comments we made on our show,” Dennis Malloy and Judi Franco said in a statement posted to the radio station’s website. “For 21 years, the Dennis and Judi show has been unscripted and free form. We use humor and sarcasm to make a point and add color to the broadcast; in this instance, we were off the mark.”

Sikhism is predominantly present in South Asia.

The two will return to the air on Aug. 6.

The incident drew national attention after Gov. Phil Murphy weighed in on the issue, and the hosts have drawn criticism from legislators on both sides of the aisle.
