Pascrell fights with Pearl Jam

Rep. Bill Pascrell is in a tiff with Pearl Jam.

The band came out against Pascrell’s Better Oversight of Secondary Sales and Accountability in Concert Ticketing Act, which would impose additional regulations on the ticket resale industry, on Wednesday, claiming in a letter to Rep. Frank Pallone, who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee, that it would enable ticket scalpers.

Pascrell says they’re wrong.

“For decades now, millions of American fans who want nothing more than to enjoy a little entertainment for their buck have been victimized by the opaque live events marketplace,” Pascrell said. “Fans have been pinched, gouged, squeezed, soaked, and outright heisted by a seemingly endless litany of hidden fees, add-ons, and gimmicks created by the unregulated ticket monopolies who operate in the dark with impunity. My bill would be the first comprehensive overhauling of this corrupt marketplace.”

The BOSS Act would require ticket sellers disclose all fees related to a purchase from the outset and refund policies, bar those involved in hosting, promoting or performing in an event to resale tickets and impose restrictions on selling tickets to a single seat to more than one person, among other things.

Pearl Jam had long railed against ticket sale giants like Ticketmaster, at one point boycotting the firm’s venues, but is using the company for ticket sales for its upcoming tour.

The fight has so far not gotten too grungy.

“Music and sports fans have waited long enough for relief. Pearl Jam may know a thing or two about making great music, but they’ve been led astray about my legislation,” Pascrell said. “I would be happy to speak with the band about why Live Nation-Ticketmaster doesn’t care about their fans and wants to preserve a corrupt marketplace.”

  1. Ohmygoodness…PJ thank you for all of your activism. Ticket sales are way out of line…still wondering if your negotiations with Ticketmaster will have a positive outcome in 2020. Love you guys, and supporting your every move, even on the corporate level.

  2. The band is right. We’re seeing first hand what this kind of legislation can do. By having non-transferable tickets and a fan-to-fan ticket exchange, they have virtually eliminated the scalper problem for their current tour. That is except for in states like New York that do not allow it. Pascrell may have the best intentions, but he is wrong.

  3. TicketMaster should be shut down. Let the artists sell their Own tickets to their Own show! I know that it is far easier said than done, don’t get me wrong. But it’seems Right.
