Bergenfield Mayor Norman Schmelz will announce his candidacy for Bergen County Executive this afternoon. So far he is unopposed for the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent James Tedesco.
Schmelz became mayor of the reliably Democratic town in 2013 following the death of Tim Driscoll, after defeating interim Mayor Carlos Aguasivas by 348 votes. He was re-elected in 2015 by 23 votes over Democratic Councilwoman Ora Kornbluth.
Tedesco is seeking re-election to a second term. The former Paramus Mayor ousted Kathleen Donovan in 2014.
This would be competitive except for the fact that the BCRO is an abyss of dysfunction. Also Tedesco/Stellato
are way less irritating than McNerney/Ferriero were. Best shot in Bergen is to get GOP Freeholders in 2019.
