Hickey enters Linden mayoral race

Linden City Councilwoman Gretchen Hickey says she will challenge incumbent Derek Armstead in the June Democratic mayoral primary.

Sources say that she will run on the Union County Democratic organization line with the support of State Sen. Nicholas Scutari, the Linden Democratic Municipal Chairman and the Union Democratic County Chairman.

Also in the race is Councilwoman Rashonna Cosby.

“When I talk with residents throughout this great City of ours, I am concerned that people are not better off than they were four years ago,” Hickey said.“We need new leadership. I stand prepared, along with my running mate Council President Jorge Alvarez, to lend our experience and new vision for Linden’s future. Linden deserves a Mayor who won’t balance the tax burden on the backs of our residents and come up with a thoughtful plan to reduce crime because every resident should feel safe in this community.”

Armstead, a longtime councilman who unseated Mayor Richard Gerbounka in 2014, found himself on Scutari’s bad side in January.   Armstead told the New Jersey Globe that he had initially agreed to support Scutari for county chairman, but then endorsed Colleen Mahr after she offered him a better deal: her spot as Union County Democratic vice chair.
