Penna, Nelson will seek Monmouth Dem freeholder nod

By David Wildstein, February 05 2020 1:10 pm

Democrats Michael Penna and Moira Nelson will mount a second for Monmouth County freeholder against this year and have lined up seventeen municipal chairs to support their bid for the organization line at an open convention next month.

Penna and Nelson were the Democratic nominees for freeholder in 2019, but lost to Republicans Tom Arnone and Nick DiRocco by a wide margin.  Penna ran more than 15,000 votes behind DiRocco and more than 20,000 votes behind Arnone.

“We listened to thousands of voters across the county last year. One thing was clear- they desperately want to be heard and the vast majority of them do not feel they are currently being represented,” said Nelson, a fashion industry executive and drug policy reform advocate. “Michael and I knew we needed to come back and finish the job we set out to do.”

Penna, a teacher who works with at-risk and special needs students, said that his experience as a candidate last year “only deepened my love for this county and confirmed for me that we can do better.”

“We can do better and we must do better for our communities,” Penna said.  “Let’s remember the essential values of kindness and understanding.”

The are expected to face Republican incumbent Lillian Burry and Monmouth SPCA executive director Ross Licitra.  Freeholder Patrick Impreveduto is not seeking re-election.
