Mercer GOP State Committee race too close to call

Hughes-backed candidate for Democratic State Committee trounced

The race for a Mercer County Republican state committee seat is too close to call.

Former Hamilton Councilwoman Ileana Schirmer leads Trenton GOP Municipal Chairwoman Jennifer Williams by 48 votes with eight districts uncounted. It’s not clear how many provisional ballots were cast in the race, and vote-by-mail ballots postmarked by primary day will be counted so long as they reach election officials before Monday.

Williams is a trans woman and would be the first transgender individual to hold a seat on New Jersey’s Republican State Committee should she win.

On the Democratic side, a state committee candidate endorsed by Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes late last week was trounced solidly by three other candidates. Ebony Witherspoon earned just 2,957 votes, while Cordelia Staton, Scarlett Rajski and Vanessa Sandom each secured more than 10,000.
