Hudson County reelected Surrogate Tilo Rivas on Tuesday night in the county’s only county-level election, the New Jersey Globe projects.
The Democrat’s reelection was never in question. Rivas defeated Republican Juliana Lombard.
As of 8:51 p.m., Rivas led Lombard 69%-31%.
Since Warren Harding’s Republican wave in 1920, Hudson County has been solidly Democratic. When Republicans do win – which has happened just three times – it’s because of top-of-the-ticket coattails: some freeholder seats flipped in 1956 thanks to Dwight Eisenhower; two district freeholder seats went red after Ronald Reagan carried Hudson in 1984; and four Assembly seats flipped in 1985 when Tom Kean was re-elected governor by a record majority.
