Republican John Lanza was re-elected to the Hunterdon County Board of Freeholders on Tuesday, emerging as the top vote-getter despite facing charges in a for drunk driving that took a month to become public.

West Amwell Mayor Zachary Rich won the seat of fellow Republican Suzanne Lagay, who declined to seek re-election after two terms.

Lanza (21,197) and Rich (21,125) defeated Democrat Cullen McAuliffe (14,860), a prominent Trenton lobbyist.

Republican Sheriff Fred Brown coasted to re-election, defeating Democrat Dominick Puzio with 59% of the vote.

In Clinton, Mayor Janice Kovach won a landslide 68% against Republican Martin Pendergast.

Hunterdon has long been one of the few unbreakable Republican bastions in New Jersey.  Democrats have not won a county race since Benjamin Kirkland won his third term in 1979.
