Ocean County Republican chairman George Gilmore was found guilty on three of six counts, but a jury was unable to reach a verdict on federal tax evasion charges.

Gilmore was convicted on charges that he failed to file employee payroll taxes and for making false statements on a loan application.  The jury found him not guilty on charges that he filed false tax returns.

The U.S. Attorney’s office will need to determine if they want to re-try Gilmore on the tax evasion charge.

The head of the most powerful Republican organization in the state, Gilmore was indicted by a federal grand jury in January.  He was accused of evading payment of more than $1 million in taxes.

Ocean County Republicans must decide if they want Gilmore to remain as county chairman.

The Asbury Park Press first reported the verdict.
