Fernandez will run for Atlantic freeholder

By David Wildstein, January 27 2020 1:30 pm

Celeste Fernandez, who came within four percentage points of ousting an incumbent Republican freeholder in Atlantic County in 2018, says she’ll run again this year.

Fernandez will seek the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican incumbent John Risley.

“I have always had a passion for serving others. We are the leaders, the change, the future,” Fernandez said.

In her last race, Fernandez held Formica to a 3,600-vote win in a countywide race, 52%-48%.

Risley was re-elected by 203 votes in 2017 against Democrat Thelma Witherspoon.  Democrat Caren Fitzpatrick, who is expected to seek re-election, defeated Republican Tony DiPietro by 1,700 votes.

Witherspoon is seeking the open District 3 freeholder seat Ashley Bennett is giving up to run for Congress.

Nick Polito, who ran for freeholder last year and won 44% against incumbent Amy Gatto for an at-large seat, is also seeking the Democratic nomination.

Correction: A previous version of this story included incorrect vote totals and listed Gatto as a District 1 candidate.
