Former Westwood mayor John Birkner, Jr. has endorsed Pete Buttigieg for the Democratic presidential nomination.
“I like a lot of what former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg brings to the table, but the one candidate that I believe can win in November and return our democracy to its status as a beacon of light is Mayor Pete Buttigieg,” Birkner said. “Bright, articulate, compassionate, courageous, empathetic, and a realist. Those are qualities many current candidates possess in one way or another, but Mayor Pete puts them all in one package that is uplifting and inspiring.”
Birkner said that Buttigieg was his third choice, after Cory Booker and Kamala Harris. Both have ended their White House bids.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff), who represents Birkner’s hometown in Congress, endorsed Bloomberg this morning.
Buttigieg has been endorsed by Rep. Andy Kim (D-Marlton), Trenton mayor Reed Gusciora, New Jersey Democratic State Committee counsel Raj Parikh, Roselle Park Mayor Joe Signorello, and Garden State Equality founder Steven Goldstein.
Birkner stepped down as mayor in 2019 to run for State Assembly in the 39th district. He ran 5,807 votes behind Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi (R-River Vale) and 3,888 behind Assemblyman Bob Auth (R-Old Tappan).Birkner Buttigie endorsement
